My greatest criticism is that you didn't cite the source of the tune, "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind." The title itself, "Requiem", is too generic to identify the source from.

My second criticism is that there is too much reverb. The reverb tail is muddying up the track.

That aside, I think you did quite well. The orchestral instruments all blend together quite well. The harp sounds a bit odd, though. I've never found a harp soundfont that satisfied my vision for an orchestral track.

Aleksandr12 responds:

I appreciate the criticism, I have to admit the reverb did kinda screw up in the initial rendering; originally it sounded much more natural.
I'm still working on finding a better harp VST, perhaps something along the lines of EWQL could satisfy my need for more "realistic" sounding orchestra.

Gah! I don't know what to say. That was beautiful. I'd be interested in hearing you play something fast and exciting on piano/keyboard.

And grats for summoning the sleeping dragon. I like that exercise he suggested.

johnfn responds:

Thank you! I wish I could go faster, but this is pretty much maxing out my ability as it is... hehe... I need to practice more!

It really does make me feel like I'm in an icy barren land. It's a lonely place. And a very beautiful place.

Always a pleasure, Mr. Night.

MrNightVarga responds:

Thank you for your continued support =)

Wow, this is quite cool. I've been hungering for a track like this for a while. Thanks for the snack!

In some places I feel like something is missing, like maybe there should be a harmony line going at a slower pace than the melody to create a fuller sound than just melody and percussion (and the long sustained chords/background notes).

Quite nice! I love the guitar.

I almost bought an erhu several years ago. I bought a violin instead. Way to go mainstream. Haha.

SourJovis responds:

Thank you. Too bad you didn't buy the Er-hu. It's quite a nice instrument. You could've performed on this track. SoundChris' Er-hu sounds good, but a real life one would've been even better.

Violin is a great instrument as well. More versatile. It's still less common than piano or guitar, so not that mainstream.

I'll keep in mind you play the violin for when I need a solo violinist.

Oh, nice work. I really enjoy it too. Did you come up with the flute harmony line yourself?

Aleksandr12 responds:

Yes, I wanted to make my own little arrangement to Greensleeves, make it my own.
I did keep the simple but beautiful melody that went to it, though.

Pretty great for a first! Excellent use of variety of note volumes, and nice job gluing it all together with the strings.

The brass instrument at 00:51 sounds weird to me. I think because each note starts with a mini-swell, and it sounds somewhat muted, like some of the frequencies are missing.

Are you saying this is going to be performed live? I hope to hear a recording of that.

tourmi responds:

For the brass instrument (I think that it's a horn, but I'm not sure, and I'm too lazy to open up my project), yeah, the mini-swell is indeed present, I actually added it so it sounded less direct and I thought it sounded quite good. As for the muted frequencies, it might be because of the other instruments around it and their reverb that are crushing it. So basically, a bad EQ job. I should mess around when I'll have time to fix that.

It's going to be recorded, but not with a professional microphone, so it'll sound like shit. If you really want to listen to it when it'll be available, just message me. We should be playing it in a concert somewhere between February and June.

Thanks for your review!

Wonderful, professional sound. I don't fully understand the lyrics. I'm definitely looking forward to more from you guys.

15thDimension responds:

Much appreciated dude, many many thanks!

Sweet upmix! The original showcases a great composition, but I feel that the true potential of the song was hidden because of the instruments used. This remix, on the other hand, brings the heart of the song out into the open.

This is just how I like electric guitars to be used. And are those... stacatto strings in the background? Whatever they are, they really provide the full "drive" of the track, and they sound great.

Masterful work, my friend.

XayberOptix responds:

Wow! You noticed the staccato strings! Good ears! :) It's always a joy to get reviews from you. Thanks for listening!
